Medical marijuana bill passes Vermont House
    Marijuana Policy Project

"In a voice vote, the Vermont House of Representatives today gave
final approval to medical marijuana legislation, bringing a long and
complicated legislative struggle close to a final conclusion. The
bill had passed by a 79-48 margin on May 13. The Senate, which had
previously passed a different version of the bill, must approve this
version before the bill goes to Gov. James Douglas (R) for his
signature. 'It's been a long and sometimes difficult process, but
this is an important step forward for patients fighting for their
lives against cancer, AIDS and multiple sclerosis,' said Neal Levine,
director of the state policies for the Marijuana Policy Project in
Washington, D.C. 'We hope the Senate will quickly give its approval
and that Governor Douglas will promptly sign this humane and
compassionate bill into law.' The Bush administration had mounted an

US guards "filmed beatings" at terror camp

"Dozens of videotapes of American guards allegedly engaged in brutal
attacks on Guantanamo Bay detainees have been stored and catalogued
at the camp, an investigation by The Observer has revealed. The
disclosures, made in an interview with Tarek Dergoul, the fifth
British prisoner freed last March, who has been too traumatised to
speak until now, prompted demands last night by senior politicians on
both sides of the Atlantic to make the videos available immediately.
They say that if the contents are as shocking as Dergoul claims, they
will provide final proof that brutality against detainees has become

US athletes told to cool it at Olympics

"American athletes have been warned not to wave the U.S. flag during
their medal celebrations at this summer's Olympic Games in Athens,
for fear of provoking crowd hostility and harming the country's
already-battered public image. The spectacle of victorious athletes
grabbing a national flag and parading it around the stadium is a
familiar part of international sporting competition, but U.S. Olympic
officials have ordered their 550-strong team to exercise restraint
and avoid any jingoistic behavior. The plan is part of a charm
offensive aimed at repairing the country's international reputation
after the deepening crisis in Iraq and damaging revelations of the
mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib
