Firefox ignites demand for alternative browser
    USA Today

"Strolling between classes at Stanford University in Palo Alto,
Calif., Blake Ross looks like any other bleary-eyed sophomore. Few
would guess that the laptop-carrying 19-year-old is a tech prodigy
leading a battle against Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser
for control of the Internet. Ross was up until 5 a.m. Tuesday
watching a surge in download requests for the official release of
Firefox version 1.0 -- the red-hot alternative Web browser he helped
create. Early demand strained the Firefox download site to near
breaking." (11/09/04)

Sweden prepares for drunken moose
    Animal Planet

"Some 300,000 moose, or elk as they're known in Europe, roam Sweden's
woods. But every autumn at least a few of the normally timid animals
end up astray, trudging out of the woods and into cities and suburbs
where they gladly munch on fermented apples that have fallen from
trees. The result is an intoxicated and aggressive brute. ... Traffic
accidents with moose are well documented: there were 4,204 of the
animals killed on Swedish roads in 2003, to be exact. Less
documented, but no less terrifying, are the reports of drunken moose
jumping through living room windows, belly flopping into empty
swimming pools or violently attacking people." (11/09/04)

Courts at odds in legal battle over felons' voting rights
    Christian Science Monitor

"In the final days before last week's presidential election, campaign
operatives in Florida were engaged in a bitter debate over
enforcement of a state law that bars convicted felons from voting.
Republicans urged strict enforcement of the law to prevent some
47,000 suspected felons listed on the state's voter rolls from
casting illegal votes. Democrats charged the effort was a vote
suppression campaign aimed at holding down turnout in minority
neighborhoods. In the end, President Bush coasted to victory in
Florida by more than 380,000 votes, but the preelection debate
highlighted a surprising fact: Some 600,000 Florida residents are
barred by law from participating in the democratic process. One of
every 6 African-American men in Florida is ineligible to vote because
of a prior felony conviction. ... All but two states, Vermont and
Maine, restrict the ability of convicted felons to vote." (11/10/04)

Oregon: White House takes assisted suicide law to top court
    Dodge City Daily Globe

"The Bush administration asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to block
the nation's only law allowing doctors to help terminally ill
patients die more quickly. The appeal from Attorney General John
Ashcroft had been expected since May, when a lower court ruled the
federal government could not punish Oregon doctors who prescribed
lethal doses of federally controlled drugs." (11/09/04)

Brazil may extend gun buy-back programme
    Independent OnLine [South Africa]

"Brazil's gun buy-back programme has been so successful that the
government is considering extending it for another six months,
Justice Minister Marcio Thomaz Bastos said on Monday. Since the
nationwide programme was launched in mid-July, Brazilians have
relinquished 160,000 guns and rifles, Bastos told Agencia Brasil, the
government's official news agency. That number is double the 80,000
the government had originally estimated would be turned in by
December 23, as part of a tough new gun law. ... Under the new law,
gun owners have to reapply for permits and only police, people in
high risk professions and those who can prove their lives are
threatened will be eligible to receive new permits. Those caught
carrying weapons without permits could face up to four years in
prison." (11/09/04)

Rape of Fallujah: "Watching tragedy engulf my city"
    BBC News [UK]

"US and Iraqi forces are locked in desperate street battles against
insurgents [sic] in the Iraqi city of Falluja. The BBC News website
spoke by phone to Fadhil Badrani, a journalist in Falluja who reports
for the BBC World Service in Arabic.: 'A US armoured vehicle has been
parked on the street outside my house in the centre of the city. From
my window, I can see US soldiers moving around on foot near it. They
tried to go from house to house but they kept coming under fire. Now
they are firing back at the houses, at anything that moves. It is war
on the streets. The American troops look like they have given up
trying to go into buildings for now and are just trying to control
the main roads. I am sitting here on my own, watching tragedy engulf
my city. ... I was with some of the Falluja fighters earlier. They
looked tired -- but their spirits were high and they were singing.'"
